The Tretyakov Gallery is the main museum of Russian national art, reflecting its unique contribution to world culture. It is a hospitable museum that is known for its rich collection and the variety of presented ideas. The Gallery holds a wide-ranging collection of Russian Realism from the second half of the 19th century. A tour to the Tretyakov gallery gives an opportunity to see some masterpieces including famous paintings by I. Kramskoy,
I. Repin, V. Surikov, I. Shishkin, V. Vasnetsov, I. Levitan and many others. The brilliant display of works of art from the turn of the 19th-20th centuries includes pieces by
M. Vrubel, V. Serov, masters of the World of Art, Union of Russian Artists and the Blue Rose groups.

1856 is generally considered being the year when the Tretyakov Gallery was first founded because it was in this year that Pavel Tretyakov bought his first two paintings by Russian artists: Nikolay Shilder's "Temptation" and Vasily Khudyakov's "Skirmish with Finnish smugglers". By the end of the 1850-s he had acquired several more canvases: Ivan Sokolov's "Cherry Picking", Valery Jakobi's "The Messenger" and also paintings by Alexei Savrasov, Mikhail Klodt and others. It is possible that it was around this time that Tretyakov first considered creating a national gallery of Russian paintings.
The Tretyakovs was an ancient, but not wealthy merchant family. Since his youth, Pavel Tretyakov was fond of music, art and theatre. His fascination with the art inspired and brought him to collecting art works. In July 1853, Pavel Tretyakov bought 11 "paintings" at Sukharevka Market, where he used to buy books. Actually, those were simple drawings.
But in the following years he bought some paintings made in oil. Those were pictures by Old Dutch masters. Later Tretyakov would prefer only canvases of Russian artists.

In August 1892 Pavel Tretyakov bestowed his art gallery to Moscow City. By this time the collection consisted of 1,287 paintings, 518 drawings and 9 sculptures by Russian artists and 75 paintings and 8 drawings by European artists (mainly French and German masters of the late 19th century). This gift was estimated at 1,429,000 roubles. News about the incredible generosity of Pavel Tretyakov's gift to Moscow, spread all over the city, and in December 1896 he was proclaimed an Honourable Citizen of Moscow. An official statement by the Moscow municipal Duma declared that it was "a sign of the great gratitude for the aesthetic pleasure and education which both the citizens of Moscow and all the Russian people have gained with this gift of treasures so carefully collected by Pavel Tretyakov". After presenting the collection to the city, Tretyakov did not turn away from the Gallery. On the contrary he was appointed its trustee and remained the trustee to the end of his life.

In the 1890s, the collection was enriched with more than 200 paintings and drawings Among them were thirty works, including paintings by N. Ghe, Pavel Tretyakov's portrait painted by I. Repin (a gift from his heirs in 1895) and also canvases by A. Savrasov,
V. Serov, N. Kasatkin and M. Nesterov.
